METAL GEAR SOLID: Master Collection Version

When this game came out on the PlayStation it blew my mind. It felt so much bigger than it actually was, largely due to the cinematic nature of the game with long cutscenes and heavy dialogue for exposition. Kojima's tropey style is well known and expertly employed here and for me this was the first game I played where it felt it was being presented like a movie, in that when it was over, you wanna discuss it with a friend. From the story, to the characters and what they mean, what they represent, what the director intended by using each trope. It feels like there's more to understand than this just being a game. Each decision feels deliberate, each detail feels like it was left there specifically to make you think about why and so much of this game subverts the very expectations we had as gamers back then. The game is ostensibly a stealth game, though there's a lot of mandatory combat in the form of interesting boss fights. The controls are clunky by today's standards but it's still very playable and easy to finish and the strong voice acting carries the atmosphere well. If you haven't dipped your toes into the MGS franchise before, then this is a decent place to start.If you have and simply wonder if the Master Collection is worth grabbing, yeah. The nostalgia hit is deep.
